Course Description

The BA (Hons) Criminology programme at Arden University provides an in-depth understanding of the causes, consequences, and societal responses to crime and deviant behaviour in the modern world. This degree examines the intricate relationship between individuals, society, and the justice system, enabling students to develop a strong theoretical foundation alongside practical insight into contemporary criminological issues.

The course explores the evolution of criminology through the study of criminal behaviour, victimisation, law enforcement, and the social and psychological factors influencing crime. Students gain a broad perspective of how crime is represented in the media, understood through global theories, and managed through the criminal justice system.

Guided by experienced academics, practitioners, and researchers, students will engage with real-world cases and contemporary issues ranging from organised crime and cybercrime to miscarriages of justice. The programme prepares graduates for professional roles in criminal justice, social services, and research, or for progression to postgraduate study.

What You Will Learn

Students will explore the key theories, debates, and research methods within criminology and related disciplines such as sociology and psychology. The curriculum develops both analytical and practical skills by examining:

  • The causes, patterns, and consequences of crime in local and global contexts.

  • The operations of the criminal justice system, including policing, prisons, and probation.

  • The role of media, technology, and culture in shaping perceptions of crime.

  • Emerging areas such as cybercrime, terrorism, and environmental (green) criminology.

  • Research techniques for analysing crime trends and criminal behaviour.

By combining theory with applied study, the course equips students with the knowledge and transferable skills necessary to address complex criminological challenges and contribute meaningfully to public safety, justice, and social policy.

Student Fee's & Finance

The Tuition Fee of the course may vary depending on the institution you wish to study at, as well as your status in the UK. The course is available for UK/EU & International Students and eligible for Student Loans Company (SLC) funding to help cover the cost of your tuition fees and other expenses.

If you are an UK/EU citizen or living in the UK on an Indefinite stay, apart from the tuition fees, you could also receive support from the government via Student Loans Company to cover some living costs while studying.

  • Tuition fee loans cover the full cost of your course and are paid directly to the course provider.
  • Maintenance Loan pays for day-to-day living expenses like rent, bills, food and books. Unlike the fees loan, it's paid directly to your student bank account once a term and you can spend it on anything you like.
  • Student Finance has to be paid back, however, you only make Student Loan repayments once you've left your course AND are earning enough. Repayments vary with your salary, and stop altogether if your income drops too low.
  • Students can also apply for other types of special support grants, such as childcare grants or Disabled Students' Allowance if eligible.
  • Moreover, almost all universities offer a selection of student bursaries. These are cash gifts you usually don't have to repay.
